A Poem for Trying Times

TAKE HEART

To escape the day’s news
I shut down my computer-
the poem could wait-
and turned to the window
long before sunrise
to watch a thunderstorm
roll in from the west.

Lightening illuminated
the wind-bent trees
with the rain visible only
in a ribbon of faint light
reflected on the pavement.

Be joyful in the ordinary;
this, too, shall pass.
