Q: What can a poet do?
A: Write poems.
A CAUTIONARY TALE
(or, Bring in the Marines)
We cheered them on
when they promised to rid us
of murderers, rapists and drug dealers,
but now they come for dishwashers
meatpackers and seamstresses,
chase terrified farm workers
through strawberry fields,
and pretend to be surprised
when la gente fill the streets,
shouting hell no and demanding
to be treated as human beings,
for this is the fight they have wanted
from the very first day.
Bring in the Marines.
