Unpopular Opinion #1
I’ve seen plenty of fireworks –
enough to last a lifetime –
and at this distance
each shell’s explosion
is a punch in the gut,
so I promise the dog
that next year,
before the show begins,
we’ll hop in the car
and go for a long drive.

It is not my intention to be a killjoy. If you like fireworks, enjoy them to your heart’s content. It’s just that after a lifetime of fireworks – hiking through the dunes or going out on the pier in Grand Haven to watch the Coast Guard Festival fireworks, helping my friend Clinton Smith put on Ann Arbor’s fireworks display as a member of the Jaycees in the 1980’s, taking my children to watch fireworks over Little Traverse Bay in Harbor Springs – I’ve had enough. My dog agrees. No mas.
