DREAMING OF CASSIS
We sit on ancient cliffs
perched above peerless blue waters,
watching mysterious yachts depart
for ports only dreamed of.
Later we teach the bartender
to make drinks from another sea
on another day like this.
As evening’s cool descends we shiver,
the shadows of other lives
nudging us towards home –
where on dark cold winter nights
we will dream of Cassis, and smile.

I wrote ‘Dreaming of Cassis’ in 1995, when a group of friends from college took a bike trip through Provence – in southern France – to collectively celebrate our 40th birthdays. Cassis was our last stop, and it was a magical place. A year or two later I entered this poem in a contest sponsored by the Traverse City, Michigan, library and it won the grand prize. I was surprised and humbled.
